External Organ
Penis
- glands are the rounded tip, separated by shaft of the penis by corona
- most sensitive
- skin folds over glands, foreskin - can be removed through circumcision
- root of penis in body
-crura attaches attaches penis to pelvic bones
-cylinders of spongie like tissue, surround
-cavities fill with blood during sexual erection
- Does not contain bone or muscle, except at root of penis, for muscular control of urination
Scrotum
- Two testicles, produce sperm and hormones that guide development of male body
- The temperature has to be just right to produce semen
- When the scrotum is held closer to the body, it reduces sperm count. Tight underwear, hot baths and showers, can result to low sperm count.
Testes
- Internal sex organ
-held inplace by a fairly rigid membrane
- sperm production and hormone production
- Male hormones are androgens ex. testosterone
- Male hormones are necessary for maintaining the male genitalia,
- Testosterone is necissary to maintain, male sexual characteristics throughout life ex. puberty and facial hair
-Takes 70 days for sperm to create and grow to 'adult'
- Stored in edpididymis where sperm will mature, abnormal sperm will be destroyed
- Testicular cancer, rare, but most common cancer in young men.
- Higher risk in men whos testes did not decend
- Seminal vesicles moves semen along.
- Fructos, gives sperm energy to move on their own
- Prostaglandins, cause uterine contractions.
- Small traces of antibiotics in semen
Prostate
- Grows over age, can interfere with urination
- Prone to cancer
- Urine can not travel with semen
- In a teaspoon there is over 500 million sperm
Circumsizion
- is removal of alot of the tissue on the penis
-painful surgical for children
- Anesthetics can not be used for infants, nervous system has not be developed.
- There can be long term effects
- By cutting the glands, it makes it an external organ
- The shaft and glands of the penis develop several layers of dry skin
-Sexual arousal is decreased in circumsized men, because there is so many nerve
endings in the foreskin, reducing penile sensation/sexual satisfaction
- Foreskin also provides lubrication
- If circumcision is not done well, men can suffer sensory loss, scaring that can effect the
penis causing soreness
